TRDP flood Relief update
Damage Assessment Report 2011
Sindh is by far the worst affected province in current monsoon floods. Torrential rains in the hardest hit areas have caused massive damage to human lives, crops, settlements, livestock and infrastructure. The Government reports 22 out of 23 districts of Sindh are covered in floodwater.

Hundreds of men, women and children are marooned in various villages of TRDP’s operational area of Umerkot, Tharparkar and at the bordering strip of Tharparkar with Naukot and Umerkot with Sanghar and Mirpurkhas.

In Mithi and other towns of Tharparkar and Umerkot prices of various commodities have shot up significantly and have led to extreme shortage of much needed items like flour, vegetables and medicines. In addition to this, the area had been without electricity for four days and without communication with outside world for about same period. Roads to these areas have been severely damaged preventing access to areas where the floods have hit the hardest. Hundreds of homeless people are looking for help and rescue especially in Umerkot and the situation is likely to deteriorate as the wave of monsoon has still not stopped.

Despite the relief efforts by the district governments of Tharparkar and Umerkot, a lot remains to be done. TRDP is working in close coordination with the district governments in order to use the resources affectively and is helping without discrimination to those affected by the heavy rains. TRDP’s needs assessment reveals that most urgently help is needed in providing shelter, food security, water, sanitation hygiene and health facilities.
